I consider myself to be a halfbreed: Half Yankee, Half Southerner (I lean more toward the Yankee side
). I was born in Camden, SC, but was raised in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. I returned to SC where I continued my education and graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Accounting.
Now I find myself in the heart of the Smoky Mountains working for Drake Software. I joined Weight Watchers in June 07 in order to lose the baby fat that will never go away. A year later I decided to start running and since then running has become an obsession. I’ve lost a total of 60 lbs and I’ve never felt better! I’ve done a few 5k runs in the past year, but now I’m looking for something that’s a little more challenging. I thought I would try to do a 10K, but someone put a thought in my head about running a half marathon. Why in the world would I want to that? This is an answer that I will probably never figure out until the race is over.
I’ve been training for the Flying Pigs half-marathon since December. Nina and I offically start training in January, but I needed a head start to keep up with her. It’s not always a blessing to have long legs. Now that January is here along with the craziness of support season at work, my training schedule will probably be the following:
Mondays: X-Training
Tuesdays: 3 mile easy run
Wednesdays: X-Training
Thursdays: 5 to 7 mile Tempo Run w/ incline and hilling training
Fridays: X-Training
Saturdays: Rest
Sundays: Long Run
I’m excited for you and hope all goes well in your training! I’m thinking of starting running soon…any tips?
Always start slow and learn that it’s ok to take breaks. One of my bad habits is that I try run 5 to 7 miles without taking a walk break in between. I guess that’s not too bad since I run at a constant pace, but I know that if I stop it’s going to be hard for me to start up again.
It’s also good to have a strong core. I recently learned that your core helps out with running tremendously. So doing some Pilates and Yoga to build up your core is a plus. Of course, I know you’re an expert in this area.
